Description

Presented in this collection are all (50) 1887 Allen & Ginter World’s Champions cards, generally considered to be the first of the tobacco issues. These fifty beautiful images were once part of the Allen & Ginter album and have been cut from the album and pasted neatly, side-by-side onto period paper for optimum preservation. Each image is centered on a paper back, unlike the actual issued tobacco cards that are cardboard. The set features world class gunmen, pool players, swimmers, boxers and, of course, ten baseball players. Among the standouts in the set are Buffalo Bill Cody, Annie Oakley, John L. Sullivan, and the baseball players include Mike Kelly, Tim Keefe, Cap Anson, John Ward, John Clarkson and Charles Comiskey. While the cut cards do not command the same value as the cigarette pack inserted cards, the overall presentation of this piece is appealing with each card displaying minimal aging.
