Description

The baseball gods shone brightest on a small boy born on the Baltimore waterfront on February 6, 1895 – bestowing not only limitless talent on the diamond but a charismatic charm and loveable disposition to autograph seekers. George Herman “Babe” Ruth loved the game nearly as much as he adored the fans and children, spending hours tossing signed baseballs from hotel windows to the crowds gathered below or visiting sick children in the hospital flashing that quirky smile and a “hey kid, I'll hit one for you today.” Character matters and Ruth was a character. Presented is a wonderful Spalding League No. 8-H vintage baseball, single-signed, with a bold “Babe” Ruth in blue fountain pen flush on the sweet spot. The signature is strong and bold across the narrow sweet spot, just where he liked it, with each letter full and distinct grading 6-7 with the slightest edge of the “h” in Ruth beginning to wane. The Spalding League Junior ball, circa late 1920s, was produced slightly smaller than the standard baseball and was intended for children to learn to play the game their heroes played. The ball has been tightly wound giving the appearance of surface wear and the official stampings are fully intact, grading 6 overall. The baseball gods made only one Babe Ruth, and they broke the mold – since his untimely death in 1948 his autograph has become the most sought after, most revered signature in all of sport. COA from James Spence for PSA/DNA.
